It's already mid-October, and today, being
part of a three-day weekend, we had a meeting with nine participants. With
fewer people, I realized that it’s easier to see everyone’s faces on the Zoom
screen, which is actually a nice bonus!
Today's TMOM (Toastmaster of the Morning)
was our president, E-san. Despite the many responsibilities from coordinating
roles in advance to managing the flow on the day of the meeting, she executed
everything flawlessly.
Although all the participants were Japanese
today, we started with the English session. One of the great things about our
club is that we create an environment where speaking English among fellow
Japanese members feels completely natural!
The prepared speech was by I-san. Since
I-san is working on Level 4 in Pathways, today’s session was a special version
that involved delivering two impromptu speeches of 2-2.5 minutes each in
response to unexpected questions. The questions were:
1. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
2. If you could redo your life, what would
you want to do?
I-san highlighted their agility as a
strength, which both they and others recognize, while mentioning that detailed
tasks are his weakness. His answer to the second question was that he would
like to work at a large global company and make a career change. I-san’s
ability to remain calm and handle such impromptu speeches is definitely one of
his strengths!
Next, we moved on to Table Topics,
facilitated by L-san in both Japanese and English. The English topics were
autumn-related, focusing on reading:
1. What’s a book you recommend?
2. If you could meet a character from a
book, who would you want to meet?
3. What kind of book would you like to
write?
It’s always great to hear about book
recommendations, especially since the world of books is so vast, and it's easy
to get overwhelmed with what to read next.
The evaluation session was led by S-san,
who delivered a passionate and insightful evaluation of I-san’s impromptu
speeches, despite the tricky situation of providing an impromptu evaluation.
After a short break, we transitioned to the
Japanese session.
The Word of the Day was introduced by
S-san: "湧き出る" (gush out). S-san mentioned experiencing changes that feel
like they’re "gushing out" at work. It’s a beautiful expression, and
I aspire to be someone whose words gush out as well!
The first prepared English speech was by
W-san, with the theme of "Ego." W-san introduced a self-development
book called StrengthsFinder and explained that her strongest quality is
"Ego." Despite this, W-san is far from an overbearing type. They are
someone so skilled at their job that their company’s U.S. headquarters has
pleaded for her to stay, and they naturally draw people in with their charisma.
That inner strength and conviction clearly shine through, and it’s an admirable
quality!
The second prepared speech was by O-san,
with the theme "Let’s Predict with Statistics!" O-san, who has a
strong background in math and science, explained that he specialized in a new
field called sabermetrics in graduate school. He used graphs to illustrate the
correlation between a baseball player’s home runs and salary, demonstrating how
to predict a player’s salary based on performance. Even though they used some
technical jargon, O-san’s explanations were so clear that even I, a humanities
person with a fear of numbers, could understand! It was fascinating to learn
that this kind of world exists, and I found numbers and graphs to be quite
interesting.
After the Japanese Table Topics (on the
theme of travel), we moved on to the evaluation session.
S-san evaluated W-san's speech,
highlighting the clarity, gestures, and engaging content. S-san also advised
that it’s important to ensure the environment is set up properly, as the book
W-san was introducing didn’t show well on Zoom. K-san, who was evaluating for
the first time, delivered a calm and confident evaluation. K-san seemed
knowledgeable about sabermetrics and provided sharp analysis and insights.
Today's Awards:
- Best Speaker: W-san!
- Best Table Topics Speaker: W-san!
- Best Evaluator: S-san!
Though it was a small meeting, the content
was rich, and we had plenty of opportunities to speak during the fulfilling
two-hour session.
